• adults 18-40 years of age

•  Your first language is Mandarin or your first language is American English

• Your first language is American English & were born in the USA

• and current or former student at a University in the USA

• For online participation: 

  • have access to a computer with a stable internet connection, wired headphones, and one of the following web browsers: Chrome, Edge, or Safari

• For in-person participation: 

  • All necessary equipment and technology will be provided.

  • Must meet on Indiana University's Bloomington Campus

• meet with researcher for 1 session

  • Online, via Zoom, or

  • In-person at the Second Language Psycholinguistics Lab, Indiana University Bloomington's campus, Ballantine Hall Rm 119

• complete a series of online tasks lasting ~ 60 minutes 

• A free sorting task where you will listen to and move audio files on a screen into groups of similar sounding files. 

• Listening to audio files and deciding if what you heard was a real word or a non-word

• A two-party survey:

  • Demographic and language background survey

  • Word familiarity survey

• A multiple-choice vocabulary task 

• Answer a few questions about your experience directly after completion of the tasks

Yes, participants will receive $20 upon completion of the study via their choice of Venmo, PayPal, or Zelle.

The study information sheet  provides all the necessary details about the research, its purpose and procedure, potential risks and benefits, and contact information for questions.
